Awards - Special Features

National Networking Opportunities

As well as supporting newcomers to ageing research through awards, SPARC will organise workshops and other networking activities which will be of direct benefit to award holders. These will provide a national platform for the presentation of work in progress and completed, and will place the award holders alongside those researchers who are leading authorities, for example pursuing major national and international projects funded by research councils and other organisations, as well as leading practitioners and other key actors in the field of ageing and ageing research. Award holders will be expected to attend at least two of the SPARC workshops and to present their work at one of these. Experience gained with the EQUAL Research Network suggests that much prestige will be attached to involvement with these workshops as well as there being excellent opportunities for networking.

Publication Support

Award holders will also benefit from assistance in publication and dissemination of their work. SPARC will organise the editing and publication of a series of Executive Summaries of all of the projects it supports. This will lead to a uniquely accessible and appealing compilation of research across a wide range of topics which SPARC is committed to promoting to science policy makers, practitioners and the research community. Findings will also be reported at SPARC workshops and through the SPARC web site.

Mentors

Also, if requested and appropriate, mentors will be appointed. These will be individuals who can adopt a broad view of the research work to be carried out and how it relates to the needs of older people, thus helping to place the research in an appropriate context.

The SPARC Story

Welcome to SPARC and KT-EQUAL: Knowledge Transfer for Extending Quality Life

SPARC brings together researchers, practitioners and policy makers in ageing. It specialises in communicating the latest design, engineering and biological ageing-related research to all stakeholders, making the case about the benefits for an ageing population of scientific research, and it encourages new blood into ageing research. Although funding for SPARC ended in December 2008, SPARC is continuing to function from the University of Reading within a new initiative - KT-EQUAL which commenced in January 2009. Soon KT-EQUAL will have its own website but for the time being news and information about SPARC and KT-EQUAL events are being handled by the SPARC website.
