In recent years the government, research councils and charities have invested considerably in research to improve quality of life for older people in care homes, in the domestic setting and in the community. And yet positive research findings are still not being applied universally and there is low awareness of the research outcomes in the long-term care industry.

This workshop will bring members of the academic community together with practitioners and long-term care providers. It will explore the barriers to implementation, and review the evidence of research. It will inform the academics and help to set the agenda for future research and development work. It will inform care home providers, practitioners and professionals about engineering, design and technologies now available to improve their services. And it will highlight the potential for commercial exploitation of research, to provide realisable solutions to the challenges of long term care for frail elders.

This is a special workshop, one of a series organised by SPARC, to promote the value of scientific ageing-related research and opportunities for further research and especially to bring together researchers, practitioners and business people. The workshop has been designed to provide a broad representation of recent advances in approaches to improving the care of older people.

CCC is a unique coalition of commercial, charitable and public service organisations with a mutual interest in providing better care for current and future generations of older people. Its members include financial service providers, care providers and commissioners, trade and professional bodies and providers of information, advisory and advocacy services for older people. CCC, which was founded in 1992, was known as the Continuing Care Conference until 2004. More information is available at www.ccc-ltc.org.uk.

SPARC (Strategic Promotion of Ageing Research Capacity) is a new initiative funded by EPSRC and BBSRC. A key activity is working in partnership with the users of research - intermediaries of all types in business, health and social services, charitable and other organisations as well as directly with older people and their carers.

In addition to organising workshops over the next three years SPARC will provide up to 30 pump-priming awards to newcomers to ageing research in the fields of design, engineering and biology.

The workshop will be of interest to a wide range of business and public sector policy makers, health and social care practitioners, industry, charitable and government bodies concerned with the needs of older people, as well as researchers and academics from engineering, biological, social science, medical and health care disciplines.

There is no charge for attendance just an enthusiasm and interest in extending the quality of life of older people through informed user-focused research and its application.

The SPARC Story

Welcome to SPARC and KT-EQUAL: Knowledge Transfer for Extending Quality Life

SPARC brings together researchers, practitioners and policy makers in ageing. It specialises in communicating the latest design, engineering and biological ageing-related research to all stakeholders, making the case about the benefits for an ageing population of scientific research, and it encourages new blood into ageing research. Although funding for SPARC ended in December 2008, SPARC is continuing to function from the University of Reading within a new initiative - KT-EQUAL which commenced in January 2009. Soon KT-EQUAL will have its own website but for the time being news and information about SPARC and KT-EQUAL events are being handled by the SPARC website.
