SPARC Award Holders Workshop
11 January 2007

Objectives

  1. To build the SPARC community by:
    1. Introducing Award holders, their RAs and others involved with projects to each other, to the Directors, SPARC Advisory Committee members and other interested stakeholders
    2. Briefing the Award holders on their role in SPARC
  2. To support the Award holders by providing a low risk and supportive environment for:
    1. Presentation of their work
    2. Discussion of issues facing the Award holders, arising from SPARC and more generally
    3. Developing some initial publicity/presentation material

Approach:

A workshop comprising:

  1. Briefings about SPARC and Ageing research in general
  2. Presentations by a few selected Award holders
  3. Posters to be constructed by all and presented by those who do not give formal presentation
  4. Small group discussions
  5. General networking
  6. Feedback and encouragement

Participants (max approximately 70):

  1. Award Holders (PIs), CIs, RAs and collaborators (say, 55)
  2. Some committee members and organisers (10)
  3. Open invitation but limited places available (5)

Other Issues:

  1. Before the meeting each team should produce up to two Posters (one to be accessible to all stakeholders, and if necessary the other for specialist scientific audiences), to a set format and dimensions (A1) and with SPARC identity so that we have a consistent set of posters. Two sets to be run off by SPARC secretariat - one set for the Award holders, the other for the organisers. These must be with Verity Smith (h.v.smith@reading.ac.uk) by 6th December 2006 so that they can be printed
  2. Travel and Subsistence - costs will be met directly by SPARC and this will not be viewed as one of the two workshops which Award holders are expected to attend within their award. These costs need not be excessive as Apex train fares are quite cheap.
  3. SPARC will meet expenses for up to two team members for Call 2 projects and one member from each of the Call 1 project teams. We regret that we cannot accommodate more team members at the workshop. For overnight accommodation please contact the secretariat for advice.
  4. A number of SPARC Advisory Committee members will be involved. They will take the role of friendly helpers especially with the poster and group discussion sessions.

The SPARC Story

Welcome to SPARC and KT-EQUAL: Knowledge Transfer for Extending Quality Life

SPARC brings together researchers, practitioners and policy makers in ageing. It specialises in communicating the latest design, engineering and biological ageing-related research to all stakeholders, making the case about the benefits for an ageing population of scientific research, and it encourages new blood into ageing research. Although funding for SPARC ended in December 2008, SPARC is continuing to function from the University of Reading within a new initiative - KT-EQUAL which commenced in January 2009. Soon KT-EQUAL will have its own website but for the time being news and information about SPARC and KT-EQUAL events are being handled by the SPARC website.
