Outline:
Recent advances in biology, engineering and design hold out the possibility of longer, healthier and happier lives for older people. However, knowledge of the possibilities raised by science among the general public is often limited. Research for a Better Age is a one day special event at which some of the best young scientists and designers in the country will showcase their work to the general public and listen to their views.
This is a special event, one of a series organised by SPARC, to promote the value of scientific ageing-related research and opportunities for further research.
Help the Aged is an international charity fighting to free disadvantaged older people from poverty, isolation and neglect. It campaigns for change in government policy, undertakes research into the needs of older people and provides local services in communities across the UK and overseas. Through a special trust, Research into Ageing, it is committed to supporting and promoting the highest quality research.
SPARC (Strategic Promotion of Ageing Research Capacity) is a new initiative funded by EPSRC and BBSRC. A key activity is working in partnership with the users of research - intermediaries of all types in business, health and social services, charitable and other organisations as well as directly with older people and their carers.
In addition to organising workshops, SPARC has provided pump-priming awards to outstanding newcomers to ageing research in the fields of design, engineering and biology.
This event will be of particular interest to members of the general public with an interest in why we age, how we age and the potential of science to help older people. It will also be of interest to members of the press or representatives of organisations seeking to benefit older people through advocacy and action.
There is no charge for attendance, enthusiasm and interest are all that is required. But it is important to reserve a place via the registration form.
