American Aging Association, the British Society for Research on Ageing and the Biotechnology & Biological Sciences Research Council of the United Kingdom in conjunction with the EPSRC and BBSRC supported SPARC Network for Extending the Quality of Life of Older People.
Background: The recent House of Lords report on the Scientific Aspects of Ageing has highlighted the need for collaborative activities which link ageing research conducted in the UK with that carried out in other nation states. Prior to the report’s publication SPARC, the American Aging Association and the British Society for Research on Ageing had recognised the potential joint advantages to be gained from activities of this type.
This is a special international workshop, organised by SPARC (with financial support from the BBSRC) which aims to promote transatlantic collaboration and awareness in ageing-related research. It’s primary aim is to facilitate collaborative links between outstanding young UK researchers and their US counterparts. A key feature of the workshop will be a collaborative and networking session attended by UK-BBSRC and US-NIA representatives and opened by the HM Consul General in Boston, Mr John Rankin.
SPARC (Strategic Promotion of Ageing Research Capacity) is a new initiative funded by EPSRC and BBSRC. A key activity is working in partnership with the users of research - intermediaries of all types in business, health and social services, charitable and other organisations as well as directly with older people and their carers.
In addition to organising workshops over the next three years SPARC is providing up to 30 pump-priming awards to newcomers to ageing research in the fields of design, engineering and biology.
